Built atop a bluff on Kauaʻi, this vacation home embraces the kama’aina lifestyle in a beautiful country setting. The careful placement of the structures on the site takes full advantage of the breathtaking views of the north shore coastline and the Kilauea Lighthouse.
Despite the height and shoreline restrictions of this Portlock location, this island home successfully takes advantage of a lot that slopes from the street to the coastal bluffs below. Every room in this residence opens up beautifully to the outdoors, allowing fresh island breezes and the soothing sounds of the ocean to flow throughout.
Nestled into the side of Nu’uanu valley, this gracious local-style home reflects the island sensitivity and individualism of the owner. From the moment you cross the bridge over the Nu’uanu Stream, you know you have reached a special place.
The Ka’alawai Beachfront home was stripped to bare studs, reframed and the residential design was organized into a friendly elegant kama’aina home. The gentle Hawaiian climate allowed us to open the home design to the cool island breezes and to take advantage of the natural daylight.
The owners of the North Shore of Hawaii residence asked for “an elegant house that happens to be on the beach.” The gentle, open, tropical architecture with Asian design motifs and a contemporary floor plan create a home that connects back to a time of true Hawaiian architecture.
Philip White Architect’s range of residential design embraces the tastes and lifestyle of our clients to create simple but elegant architecture with timeless and contemporary tropical spaces. The homes shown here demonstrate design responses to the many distinctly different microclimates of the Hawaiian Islands. With thoughtful detailing and striking refinement, they blend seamlessly with their surroundings.
